. persistent problem but Japanese brome may compete for spring moisture with establishing shrubs <br />if its population increases. Shrub density is low at Seneca II (Table 6) relative to Colowyo. <br />However, several of the seeded shrub species appear to be establishing despite the drought and <br />competition from weeds. Shrub tubelings planted in some of the plots continue to show high <br />survival in 2003 (Table 7). <br />In summary, these preliminary results indicate that the two seedings at Trapper Mine <br />have yet to establish. Continued drought conditions may mask treatment effects in 2004. Initial <br />seeding at Colowyo resulted in establishment of most of the seeded species and weedy annuals <br />that dominated plots during this first growing season appeaz to be declining. Seedmg and shrub <br />transplanting at Seneca II mine appeazs to have been somewhat successful but more time and <br />precipitation will be needed to make a suitable evaluation. <br />• <br /> <br />
