Although the three known nesting territories (Sections 3, 13, and 27) are relatively close
• together, most were occupied every year since 1996 (Table 2). Fledging success was not
determined in most years (1997-2003), but the continued occupation of the territories suggests
that eagles have not been affected by activities at the Seneca II Mine.
SANDHILL CRANE ACTIVITY
No nesting sandhill cranes were found on or near the Seneca II permit area during May
2003. However, one sandhill crane was heard calling from the vicinity of S W Section 11 or the
southern portion of Section 12 on the morning of 2 May. When biologists visited those areas no
cranes were observed.
LITERATURE CITED
Cannon, R.W. and F.L. Knop£ 1981. Lek numbers as a trend index to prairie grouse
populations.
