The other problem is aspect. Most of the areas which have been
seeded with poor to moderate success face south and are on relatively
steep slopes. Heat build-up in the medium is very intense with
temperatures in the summer often exceeding 100 degrees within the first
inch of the medium. A mulch would help to reduce this temperature, but
if the water cannot be retained, even cool temperatures would not result
in good growth. Once again, until the medium can be modified so as to
hold more water, a cooler growth medium would not be of great benefit.
RULE 2. 1 7 ESTIMATES OF THE LOCATION AND NU)IDER OF ACRES TO BE
AFFECTED IN THE C014ING YEAR.
It is difficult to determine how much additional land will be
affected in the next year, but certainly it will not be a great deal
more than about 3 acres. About all that is left to be mined is the dike
area. With both Castle Concrete and Daniels Sand working on removal of
this sand it should not last more than a few years, even with a
depressed market demand. Therefore, at least 907 of the mining which
will occur in the next year will be done on the south side of the
operation and with the remainder of the mining occurring in the pit
floor and on the west side.
MAP: Attached is the annual report map which is almost identical to the
map provided last year. Only a few minor additions and changes were
made.
Page 3 of 3 1989 SAND PIT ANNUAL REPORT
