• MINE WATER
Bear's existing discharge permit provides for the discharge of mine water directly to the
North Fork of the Gunnison River through outfa11001. Therefore Bear was prepared to handle
the mine water discharge from the old B-Seam portal which emerged on November 17, 1997.
On November 24's Bear sent a letter to the Water Quality Control Division (WQCD) requesting
that outfall 001 be moved about 1,000 feet downstream.
During December a sample from outfall 001 was collected and sent to Commercial
Testing and Engineering for a two species acute bioassay. The purpose of these tests was to
determine if effluent from outfall 001 complies with the WET (Whole Effluent Toxicity) portion
of Bear's discharge permit. Results found that a demonstration of acute WET occurred during
the test. Bear conducted accelerated testing using the single species found to be more sensitive
(Ceriodaphnia dubia). Two accelerated tests were performed on C. dubia. The first test was
completed on January 5"' and the second test was completed on January 1 1, 1998. Neither test
indicated the effluent was toxic to C. dubia. Since two consecutive tests passed, no pattern of
toxicity is found and the toxicity episode is considered to be ended.
Following is a table which presents monitoring results for the mine water discharge.

• -6-
