GROUND WATER MONiTORTNG
Quarterly water samples are collected at monitoring wells AA-1 and AA-3 using a hand
bailer. The results of groundwater data collected during 1997 and pertinent water quality
parameters are found below. Depth to water is measured from the top of the steel casing on AA-
l and top of the 2-inch PVC pipe for AA-3. The location of the alluvial wells can be found on
map, "Figure I1", in Appendix A. Graphs and well completion diagrams are presented in
Appendix B. Laboratory reports are presented in Appendix C.
Monitoring well AA-1 was destroyed by the November 1997 slide and has not been
replaced.
Monitorine Well AA-1:
Quarter Date pH
su Temp °C Depth
feet Cond.
umhoslcm TDS
ppm Oil or
Grease
1" 3/31/97 7.3 10.2 9.54 2,400 1,210 None
2"d 5128197 7.3 17.5 7.5b 3,000 1,510 None
3rd 8/26/97 7.1 26.2 9.0 4,070 3,600 None
4d' 11/30/97 Destroyed by Slide
Monitorin¢ Well AA-3:
Quarter Date pH
su Temp °C Depth
feet Cond.
umhos/cm TDS
ppm Oil or
Grease
1" 3/31/97 7.8 4.2 8.48 1,120 560 None
2"d 5/28/97 8.1 10.3 5.76 240 120 None
and 8/26/97 7.3 17.8 7.78 1,060 -- None
4d' 11/30/97 7.8 8.6 7.98 3,300 1,660 None
Findings:
AA-1 No laboratory results are available for AA-1 since this well was destroyed in November
1997 and laboratory samples are typically collected in December. The field conductivity in
the well was 2,400, 3,000 and 4,070 umhos/cm during the 1" , 2"d and 3'd quarters
respectively. The 4070 umhos/cm value is a little high for this well and may have been
influenced by the pending mine water discharge discussed in the introduction. The
unusually high water temperature measured in the third quarter (26.2 °C) further supports
_2_
