Lang
Division Dnecior
1 have reviewed thesemi-annual subsidence report submitted by Mountain Coal
Comlpany for mining within the "B" Seam at their West EIk Mine. Briefly
summarized, the report contains a straight forward rendition of the survey data
for Their numerous subsidence monitoring points. While the annual report is
intended to contain an in depth discussion of the observed movement, the Division
recently amended Mountain Coal's permit requirements to require a brief
discussion in the semi-annual report, as well. Both MM's brief discussion and
detailed data report are acceptable.
I was surprised to read MCC's explanation of a recently developed crack above the
subsiding area. The report describes this crack as "5' wide, 58' long, and 38' deep.
A crs~ck of this magnitude suggests some possible complication other than simple
subsidence troughing, such as lateral landslide movement. I recommend that you
visit the site of this reported crack in order to determine whether there may have
beeni a landslide component of this surface subsidence adjustment.
I recommend acceptance of the report as submitted, pending your inspection and
resolution of the of the reported cracks morphology.
Cc: Susan McCannon
Dave Berry
Doc: M:\COHL\JBP\MCC Subrp.wp5
JP\jIP
