The
' Upper Sandstone Facies, Coal and Siltstone Facies, and Lower Sandstone Facies are referred to
as upper, middle and lower respectively as a matter of simplicity. The Deserado Mine coal seams
are located near the bottom of the Coal and Siltstone Facies (middle zone). Water levels are
' measured quarterly in the sixteen (16) groundwater monitoring holes. The water level is measured
monthly in QAL-5, and samples are analyzed quarterly for the twenty two water quality parameters
' listed in Table 2-1.
The new alluvial monitoring hole, RM-1, was drilled east (downstream) of the pond for Refuse
' Disposal Area 2J3 on September 28, 1989. The location of this hole is shown on Plate 1. This
monitoring hole was drilled to fulfill a requirement of the mine permit that had been overlooked during
' the first term. The requirement was discovered during the permit renewal process in early 1989.
RM-1 was drilled to bedrock at a depth of 32 feet. No water was encountered during drilling. The
hole was drilled with seven-inch hollow flight augers and cased with perforated two-inch PVC pipe.
' The hole is monitored on a monthly basis. No water has been detected in RM-1 to date. If
' 4
1
