~, WOODY PLANT DENSITY
During 1995 a comprehensive review of woody plant estabhshment was conducted. The results,
summarized in Exhibit 5, along with the positive results found within the elk exclosrrres, show the severe impact
that local wintering elk populations have had on the establishment of woody plants. Because of this severe
impact from Elk it is evident that altematives to the establishment of woody plants is warranted. The good news
is that clearly, hazed upon our observations of wildlife use on the reclaimed areaz, valuable wildlife habitat haz
indeed been rcestabhshed on reclaimed lands.
We have initiated discussions with the DOW, BLM and CDMG to get beyond the notion that the
establishment of woody plants is the only measure of wildlife habitat enhancement. Colowyo is developing
alternatives to conduct offsite habitat improvement projects az a more effective means of providing enhanced
wildlife habitat.
U

10
