Kvaerner Metals

1

Project No. 306900
General Specification No. GC-01
Site Work
0
The top 12 inches of fill below the slab on grade shall consist of free-draining,
- well graded granular and non-expansive soils compacted to 95 percent maximum
density, at a moisture content within 2°/9 of optimum moisture content, as
determined by ASTM D 1557.
01
On-site soil materials may be used as compacted structural fill below the top 12
inches and the following procedure shall be followed:
0
The soil materials shall be moisture conditioned to 2 percent to 4 percent
over optimum moisture content and compacted to at least 90 percent but
not more than 95 percent of the maximum dry density as defined by
ASTM D 1557.
The soil material shall be placed in thin lifts about 6 inches in compacted
thickness and compacted with a kneading type compactor such as a
sheepfoot type roller.
The surface, after placement of structural fill, shall be periodically
moistened to prevent drying prior to placing of concrete or additional fill
material.
Field density tests shall be performed as indicated in Section 5.2.
The limit for structural fills shall not be less than 2 ft. beyond the outside face of
concrete.
' 6.0 STRUCTURAL EARTHWORK
t Foundations and footings shall be established upon suitable undisturbed soil or upon
compacted structural fill as shown on the drawings or as directed by the Engineer.
Placement and compaction of structural fill shall be as specified in Section 5.3.
r 6.1 Structural Excavation
All excavation shall be made to the depth called for on the drawings. Bottom of
excavation shall be clean and clear of loose material.
' If excavations to the depth indicated on the drawings terminate in material which
is not suitable for foundation support, the Engineer shall be informed and shall
direct the corrective action required.
' `~ ~" The sides of all foundation excavations or°trenches 5hsli be- adequa:eiy
supported by bracing or shoring and sheeting as necessary to ensure against
slides, slips or cave-ins and to meet all safety code requirements.
1
' J:Wfi9tWRiPEC\5]RUOT00015PC.DOC.
