Woody Plant Density Sampling -
Woody plant density was sampled at each point-intercept transed in the Reclamation
Areas. Woody plant density data were not taken in the Mountain Brush and Sagebrush
Reference Areas. All shrubs and subshrubs were tallied if their root crowns emerged
within the boundary of the (50m x 2m = 100 m2) transect. Both the number of woody
plants per 100sq.m. and a projected number of woody plants per acre were tallied and
presented in the data tables.
Photographic Record
Within each Reclamation and Reference Area, representative color photographs were
taken to document the appearance of the vegetation in 2002.
Plant Nomenclature
Plant nomenclature follows Weber and Wittmann 1992, as updated on the University of
Colorado Herbarium website. Details of nomenclatural note include:
• Thinopyrum intermedium and T. intermedium ssp. barbulatum were not
• distinguished. Further, as per Weber and Wittmann, T. intermedium is taken
to include the former Agropyron trichophorum.
• Elymus lanceolatus fm. dasystachya and E. 1. fm, psammophilus were not
distinguished; the two combined are reported here as Elymus lanceolatus.
^ E. 1. fm. albicans, the putative hybrid between Pseudoroegneria spicata ssp.
spicata and Elymus lanceolatus, has been separately identified because it is
so clearly different.
• Among big Sagebrush, no attempt was made to separate mountain big
Sagebrush (Seriphidium vaseyanum) from basin big Sagebrush (Seriphidium
tridentatum). Both occur in the native upland areas but most of pre-existing
Sagebrush and Reclaimed Area Sagebrush is mountain big Sagebrush.
Climatic Data
Precipitation data from the Colowyo Mine were provided for the period of January 1998
through September 2002. The long-term averages for precipitation and temperature
were obtained from the Western Regional Climate Center's data for the Craig 4 SW
weather station located approximately 25 miles northeast of the Colowyo Mine. Climate
• data are graphically represented in Figures 1 through 7.
4
