• Location of Samples <br />In 2002, sampling for the collection of cover, woody plant density, and species diversity <br />data was undertaken at points randomly located in the following areas: <br />• pre-1995 Reclamation -East Pit (seeded 1978 to1994) <br />• 1995 Reclamation -East Pit <br />• 1995 Reclamation -West Pit <br />• 1995 Reclamation -Section 16 Pit <br />• 1998 Reclamation -East Pit <br />• 1998 Reclamation -West Pit <br />• 1998 Reclamation -Section 16 Pit <br />• 2000 Reclamation -East Pit <br />• 2000 Reclamation -West Pit <br />• Mountain Brush Reference Area <br />• Sagebrush Reference Area <br />Sample locations are shown on Maps 3 through 13. Random points were selected using <br />the Avenue-based random point generator subprogram in the ArcView 3.2a software <br />program. <br />In the two Colowyo Reference Areas, maps of each were gridded by hand in the field <br />after exact dimensions could be determined. Grid cells for these Reference Area maps <br />measured 100 ft x 100 ft. They were sequentially numbered and ten sampling points <br />were chosen using a random numbers table (Table O; Rohlf and Sokal 1969). <br />Cover Sampling <br />At each sample site, cover data were collected using aCover-Point Optical Point <br />Projection Device. This device uses the point-intercept method to tabulate data as <br />interceptions of either bare ground, litter, standing dead, rock, or plant species with a <br />very fine and rigidly projected point. Sampling occurred along randomly located and <br />randomly oriented 50m transects. Along each transect, 100 points were systematically <br />spaced at a rate of 2 points per meter, projected 50cm out from either side of the tape. <br />Litter was considered to be any organic material on the soil surface. Standing dead was <br />. any dead plant material that was produced in previous years but was still standing and <br />2 <br />
