West Elk Mine 2004 Annual Hydrology Report 1
• 1.0 INTRODUCTION
The 2004 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) details the hydrologic monitoring activities at the
Mountain Coal Company, LLC (MCC) West Elk Mine (Project) for the Water Yeaz 2004 (WY
2004), October 1, 2003 through September 30, 2004. This report summarizes the hydrologic
monitoring-related information and presents an analysis of the data with respect to mining
operations as required by MCC's Permit C-80-007 with the Colorado Division of Minerals and
Geology (CDMG).
1.1 Overview of Mining Operations
In WY 2004, mining was completed in longwall panel 22 and mining was advanced up to crosscut
10 in longwall panel 17 at the Project. Development mining continued in longwall panels 23 and
24 (see Map 1).
2.0 HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY OF WY 2004
During the WY 2004, October 1, 2003 through September 30, 2004, precipitation and snowfall
• were below average to average, resulting in less than average stream flows in Western Colorado.
2.1 Climatological Data
Precipitation and snow data for the Project area for WY2004 were derived from the Paonia 1 SW
(56306), Overland Reservoir (59853), and McClure Pass (59743) meteorological and Snotel
stations. Figures la, b, and c show the WY 2004 monthly average precipitation data compazed to
the monthly 30-year (1971-2000) historical averages for Paonia, Overland Reservoir and McClure
Pass. The total annual precipitation was 87%, 105%, and 82% of the 30-year historical averages
for Paonia, Overland Reservoir and McClure Pass, respectively.
•
August 2005 HydroGeo, Inc.
