E. Prairie Dog Colonies
The prairie dog colony evaluation included an intensive field
review. The major dispersion of prairie dogs (Black-tailed)
throughout Dowe Flats is shown on the enclosed prairie dog
colony map (figure 3). Though prairie dogs were observed
in most fields, the majority of the prairie dog towns are loca-
ted in fields nlA, ~7 and ~9. With field ;i9 having the great-
est concentration. A hole (active) by hole prairie dog count'
was completed in these fields and the following numbers were
obtained:
Field Number Prairie Dog Holes
J

1
1 36
lA 136
2 42
3 22
4 10
5 Prairie dogs observed on property few
6 Prairie dogs observed on property few
7 118
8
9
10
11
active holes. ~~
active holes.
Prairie dogs observed on property few active holes.
2,734
Prairie dogs observed on property few active holes.
17
TOTAL 3,142 Prairie Dog Holes
{active) counted.
Dowe Flats prairie dog colony inventory revealed 3,142 active
prairie dog holes on approximately 869 acres. Several other
colonies and prairie dogs were observed on adjacent properties
that were not accounted for in this inventory.
Past livestock over grazing and the high concentration of prai-
rie dogs in pasture 9 have contributed to serious degrada-
tion of areas of this field. The grazing scheme that is pre-
sently used on this pasture does not address the grazing impacts
of both grazers (cattle and prairie dogs); therefore, the con-
dition of the pasture can only get worse if proper management
is not implemented.
i
-7-
