4. SEDIMENT PONDS
A. NPDES Quarterly Reports
All sediment pond discharges were sampled and monitoring
data was reported to the appropriate State and Federal
agencies. Copies of the quarterly monitoring reports are
found in Exhibit 6.
The discharge permit for the loadout was renewed
effective July 1, 1990. The renewed permit number
CO-G-850008 (formerly number 0038164) is a General Coal
Mining Permit.
B. Quarterly Inspections
The quarterly inspection reports are found in Exhibit 7.
All the inspection reports indicate there are no problems
at any ponds.
C. Sediment survey
During 1990 a detailed topographic survey of H-G 8, Point
004, was undertaken by an independent registered
surveyor. The results of the survey indicated 12.24 acre
feet of storage available below the primary spillway
versus 11.19 acre feet required. Also during 1990, the
outlet structure at the Truck Loop Pond, Point OOlA, was
modified to increase the storage below the primary
spillway to 1.08 acre feet versus 0.74 acre feet
required.
At the reclaimed mine and shop sites, under Facility
Number COG-850018, all ponds have adequate sediment
storage capacity available. The Shop/Office Pond, Point
003, is the only pond that has accumulated sediment
beyond having excess capacity. At the Loadout Area,
under Facility number COG-850008, all ponds now have
excess capacity as a result of the outlet modification.
There is, however, a discrepancy between the 1989 survey
showing a sediment accumulation of 13$ versus the 1990
survey showing excess capacity at the Rail Loop Pond. A
more detailed survey will be undertaken at this location
in 1991.
A volumetric summary for sediment volumes in each pond
follows:
