Destructive test samples shall be packaged and shipped via express mail to the
laboratory.
The laboratory shall provide verbal test results no more than 24 hours afrer they
receive the samples. Written results will follow within one week. (See Figure 8,
example of destructive seam test report form.)
Destructive Testin; of Seams
Destructive testing of seams is very important because it provides the only direct
evaluation of seam strength and bonding efficiency which indicates seam
durabilirv.
Destructive testing involves two techniques: 1) shear testing, and Z) peel testing.
Shear testing applies a tensile stress from the top sheet through the weld and into
the bottom sheet. Peel testing, on the other hand, peels the top sheet back against
the overlapping edge of the bottom sheet in order to obsen'e how separation
occurs. The peel test indicates whether or not the sheets are continuously and
homogeneously connected through the seam.
~Specitication for Seam StrengSh
(based on NSF sa Standards)
Material TvoeTvoe No. Of Coupons Minimum Values Required
(Pounds per Inch of Width)
~ ~e~ Shear Shear
p'°~
i `ci 23 .'C 1 Fusion Extrusion Fuston
30 Mil HDPE 2 l 35 49 63 63
40 Mil HDPE 2 1 48 67 86 86
60 Mil HDPE 2 1 70 98 l26 1Z6
80 Mil HDPE 2 1 9~ l33 171 171
100 Mil HDPE 2 l 11~ 168 2l6 2l6
40 Mil Txtrd HDPE 2 l 42 60 76 76
60 Mil Txtrd HDPE 2 l 63 88 113 1 l3
80Mi1TxtrdHDPE 2 1 84 118 l~l 1~1
ILPI standazd testing procedure is as follows:
If there is a failure in either peel or shear then five total coupons aze tested.
