' INTRODUCTION
The 1991 Hydrologic Monitoring Annual Report for the Bear Number
' 3 Mine is hereby submitted by Bear Coal Company, Inc. in
accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Colorado Mined
Land Reclamation Board (MLR) and pursuant to the Colorado Surface
' Coal Mining Reclamation Act.
Bear Number 3 Mine, operated by Bear Coal Company, Inc., is
' located along the North Fork of the Gunnison River approximately
1/4-mile east of Somerset, Colorado, along State Highway 133.
Methods of analysis were consistent with EPA standard testing
procedures, the parameters of which are presented in Table 1.
Field test data was collected quarterly and laboratory test data
was collected annually.
~. Drawing 1 shows the locations of the groundwater monitoring
points AA-1 and AA-3 and is included as Appendix 3.
GROUNDWATER MONITORING
' Water samples were collected at monitoring stations AA-1 and AA-3
using a hand bailer. A YSI (Yellow Springs Instrument) Model #33
was used to measure water quality, temperature, conductivity, and
' salinity in the field. The pH levels were taken using a Cole
Palmer Model #5941-00 pH meter. All other parameters were
determined by collecting samples in precharged bottles and
' submitting them to ACZ Laboratories, Inc. of Steamboat Springs,
Colorado, for analysis. The results of groundwater data
collected during 1991 are presented in Appendix 1. Graphs of the
pertinent water quality parameters are also shown in that
' appendix.
' SURFACE WATER MONITORING
There are no surface monitoring control points within the permit
area.
' Quarterly inspection reports of the two sediment control ponds
located in the permit area are included as Appendix 2. NPDES
forms previously filed with the Colorado Department of Health can
also be found in Appendix 2. There was no discharge from either
of the sediment control ponds during the 1991 reporting period.
1
