.~ -
1994 AflR Review Page 3
January 25, 1995
4. The Division will approve the abandonment and reclamation of
wells D-1, D-2, D-3, E-2 and F-1. The Division finds that
these wells are no longer needed or will not be needed in the
monitoring program because the D seam was never mined and lies
below the E seam, which was mined. The F seam was also never
mined and while it lies above the E seam, the water level in
the well has not changed significantly since monitoring began
in 1980. Mining in the Red Canyon mine was designed to
produce no subsidence by extracting coal at 50 percent. E-2
can be abandoned as E-1 will be monitored. E-1 and E-2 are
completed adjacent to each other and down to approximately the
same depth. The water levels collected for each well are
similar.
However, the Division would like the opportunity to sample the
wells prior to abandonment and reclamation to verify the water
levels collected in 1994. A time to sample the wells should
be worked out between you and Dan Mathews, who will be the
lead specialist as of February 1, 1995.
Observations and recommendations which require a response should be
provided to the Division on or before March 3, 1995. Please call
if you have any questions.
S
Christine E. John,~t~n
Environmental Pr a tion Specialist
CEJ/034AtIIt. 94
