<br />' DOWE FLATS -BFF SURVEY PROTOCOL -LECTURE TO FIELD CREWS <br />Page 2 <br />' .Data recorded by field crew leaders: <br />- name of field crew leader and technician <br />- survey area (1-3) <br />' - route of pedestrian surveys (each person); successive replications don't need <br />to be mapped if similar. <br />- beginning/ ending times of each replication, each night <br />' -amount vehicle/ foot time per replication <br />- n replications <br />- list of species observed each night of survey <br />- number of high interest species observed (e.g., badger, fox, coyote, lion, <br />skunk, snakes, GHO, bobcat, etc.) <br />- n hours and light (cp) used on each battery (A-F), each night -for recharge <br />. Terminate surveys 00545 hours and assemble a[ Water Tank by 0600 to report <br />' survey results and drop off batteries, radios, and notes. <br />.What to do i[you see a ferret? <br />t -Try to TD animals with binocs <br />- Crew advances rapidly to within SOm of animal; 1 person walking in light <br />beam sometimes facilitate close approach. <br />- If animal decends burrow, wait for i[ to reappear. <br />' _ If no reappearance in 10 min., mark burrow w pin flag, move further away, <br />and watch Cor animal to reappear. <br />- If a BFF or European ferret is suspected, call Rick Thompson on radio. <br />-Survey crew leader photographs and documents with extensive notes, while <br />technician maintains watch. <br />c. Plattue <br />' -background <br />.plague has been in CO since 1940's <br />.most ppl. contract via flea bite <br />' .PD fleas obligates to PDs, nonagressive; vs. rock squirrel fleas -bite anything <br />.PDs usually die in burrow, (leas abandon carcass-move to mouth of burrow & wait <br />for new host to walk by <br />' .daily flea migration within burrows: near mouth at night; down hole during dry, hot <br />day <br />.pathogen a bacteria; Perontyscus an endizootic host that maintains plague in <br />environment <br />-prophylaxis <br />.wear boots, long pants; tuck pants in socks <br />.apply spray insect repellant to legs, esp. below knees (wash hands after application <br />.avoid burrow mouths <br />.shower when you get home <br />-symptoms <br />.appear in 1-6 days <br />' .not subtle: high fever, nausea, malaise, bubo (large swollen lymph node in are <br />draining bite <br />.if symptoms appear and you suspect plague, contact your doctor or go to emergency <br />room immediately. Tell doctor you have been working in a prairie dog town <br />where plague has been confirmed by health authorities. Plage is treatable <br />with antibiotics if caught early. <br />41 <br />
