Dear Bill: During the permitting process associated with the Dowe Flats Mining Project, Boulder County, Colorado, Southwestern Portland Cement Company committed to conduct black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) surveys according to Federal guidelines (U.s. Fish and Wildlife Service [USFWS] 1989) prior to mine development. Between August 7 and 10, 1994 ferret surveys were conducted throughout prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) towns on and beyond the Dowe Flats Permit Area in accordance with a USFWS approved protocol. No black-footed ferrets were detected. Enclosed is a report documenting the ferret surveys. I have sent copies directly to the USFWS and Colorado Division of Wildlife. I have also forwarded 15 copies of the report to Mr. Michael Figge, LREP, Inc., Dowe Flats Environmental Studies Coordination.
