In previous assessments For other
actions in Routt County, the Office of Surface Ptining Reclamation and
Enforcement (OSMRE) has addressed impacts on four terrestrial species and
the listed fish species of the Upper Colorado River Basin. These suecies
are t„c bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocepi:alus), the peregri,^^.~ falcon
(Falco pere rinus), the whooping crane Grus americana), the black-footed
ferret hhlstela nigripes), the Colorado squawfish Ptychocheilus lucius)
and the hwnpback ccY~iuFiTGila cypha). A phone conversation with Ro e~r~
Leachman of the U. S. Fis~z and Wildlife Service (USF'.VS), Grand Juncr"ion,
Co l:;ra:1o on June 15, 1937 verified this list as accurate.
Proposed Action and background Information
T'ne proposed action is a permit renewal for the Pittsburg and midway Coal
.Mining Company (PF,PI) to continue its existing surface coal mining and
reclamation operation at the Edna p1ine in Rout County, Colorado. 'Che
mine is located approximately five miles northeast of Oak Creek, Colorado
in an area dominated by aspen, mountain shrub and sagebrush habitats. A
total of 1120 acres of land would be disturbed and reclaimed
inr, rementalLy in parcels. The postmining landscape would include
restored rangeland and wildlife habitat. 1'he mining would not disturb
100 percent of any habitat and reclaimed lands would support many of the
wildlife species associated with the premising conditions. Basically,
minirn~ and reclamation would not preclude use of the site by any of the
listen species.
