have increased since (2819 mg/l this year). This is in spite of the fact that TDS values
upstream at the 004 pond have increased steadily since 1982 (3726 mg/t 1994 annual •
average).
The second well in the Cow Camp Creek alluvium, Yell 69-A, was completed in the summer of
1988. ft is Loce[ed approximately one and one-half miles downstream of Yell 46-A. In
1994, water samples at this well displayed a CaM gNa-504 Type water. The annual average
TDS value of 3062 mg/t is within the historic range. The average TDS value for this well
in 1994 was nine percent higher than Yell 46-A. This is most Likely a result of the high
amount of salts in the soils of Twentymile Park (see Later discussion of the Trentymile
Park end Fish [reek surface water systems).
4ell 68-A, completed in the Bond Creek alluvium, was also completed in the summer of 7988.
It is located approximately two miles downstream of the 008 pond. The water samples et
this well have displayed a CaM9Na-504 type water since the onset of monitoring. The
average TDS value of 5323 mg/l during 1994 was within the historic range (4807 to SOBS
mg/l).
Lennox-Madge Interburden. Tro reps are used [o monitor the water quality of [his strata: •
21-LYI and 42P1-LYI. Yell 42P1-LYI did not have enough water in its casing to sample this
year. 4ell 21-LYI, situated outside of the permit boundary and downdip of prelaw mining
and an old fly ash pit previously operated by Colorado-Ute Electric Association, displays
a CeM g-504 type water (Table 6). TDS levels peaked in 1984 (2185 mg/l average) and have
generally decreased since then. This decrease of TDS values may indicate that the most
readily soluble constituents may have been flushed from [he system in prior years.
Madge Coal. Two wells are used to monitor the water quality of this strata: 17-Y and
19-Y. Yell 17-Y, situated downdip from spoils, receives recharge from the Madge
Impoundment and the Little Grassy Creek alluvium. It displays a Na-504 type water (Table
7). The average TDS value at this well in 1994 (3549 mg/t average) is above the historic
range. Yell 19-Y, downdip of mining, has an anomalous water quality with a high
percentage of sodium and bicarbonate. TDS values have fluctuated very little since 1981,
ranging from about 800 to 900 mg/l.
Yolf Creek Overburden/Vadge Underburden. Three wells are used to monitor this strata:
7-YCO, 8P1-U, and 11-U. 4ell 7-YCO, located downdip of the Yolf Creek pit, is a CaNg-S04 •
6
