The most impressive part of the Lone Pine Gulch Portal Site reclamation is the vegetative cover
present. Not only was the observed vegetation noticeably robust for having only five weeks of
growth, no annual species were detected on either reclamation site. Perennial grasses represent
the dominant life-form growing on the Lone Pine Gulch Portal Site. None of the vegetation
observed on these reclaimed areas was producing seed, and it is unlikely that any seed was
produced prior to the onset of freezing temperatures in mid-October of 2002. This azea should be
evaluated closely in the spring of 2003 to determine if viable plant germination is progressing. If
perennial grass sprouts are lacking amidst the presence of adequate moisture, or if an infestation
of annual species is detected, immediate application of the desired seed mixture should be
initiated.
