Revegetation
• Seeding and Planting. Permanent revegetation activities in 1993 included planting and
seeding of trees and shrubs as described below. There were no areas seeded with the
permanent seed mixes (i.e., Seed Mixes No. 1 or No. 2) during the 1993 year. Tempo r'a ry
revegetation was conducted in 1993. Seed Mix No. 3 uas used for temporary stabilization of
Stockpile AA. This mix, as listed in Table 93.3, uas broadcast seeded in fall 1993. No
mulching activities or cover cropping were conducted during 7993.
A total of 10,500 tree and shrub seedlings were planted in 5 concentrated planting areas in
1993 (see Exhibit 93.5, "1993 Seeding, Planting, and Need Control Locations). Table 93.4
lists planting areas, approximate acreages, species composition of each area, and the total
numbers planted by species for each area, All plant materials were one-yea r-old
containerized nursery stock developed from chokecherry,(Prunus Vi rginiana) serviceberry
(Amelanchier al nifolia) and Gambel oak <DUercuS gambelii) seed collected from the Seneca 11
mine site. Aspen (POpulus tremuloides) seedlings were developed from regional native
sources. The seedlings were grown and planted by Bitterroot Native Growers, Inc. (8NG) of
Hamilton, Montana. Deer-AUay browse repellent was placed on all planted seedlings. all
seedlings were treated with a mycorrh izal fungi inoculum that was developed at the BNG
nursery. the source of the mycorrh izal inoculum was from soil collected in native mountain
bush stands at the Seneca 11 Mine. Plantings were completed in late September 1993 in
reclaimed sites which were disced several times during the growing season to control
established herbaceous vegetation and prepare the site for planting. The heavy di sting
created numerous planting microsites. In addition, some sites received herbicide
treatments.
The seedlings were planted in the prepared sites which are described as follows. All five
sites were discetl at least twice during the growing season. The additional treatments at
each plot were:
Site 93-1. Application of OUST pre-emergent herbicide in a tank mix with water. The
entire site was treated. Applied rate equaled 0.5 lb per acre of OUST.
Site 93-2. The western half of this site received the herbicide treatment described
in Plot 93-1. The eastern half of the site was disced only.
Site 93-3. this entire site received the same herbicide treatment as Site 93-1.
•
8
