1984 Reclamation Report ~'.;'~~1' ~:: J
Genstar Building Materials Company
Coaldale Quarry
.v
Reclamation efforts this year took place on three different sites which
total approximately 5.5 acres. Site A (see map) is a waste dump site ~
on the south end of Gillespie Dump. The area was contoured and ripped
with the dozer in late July and was then seeded, fertilized and mulched
the first part of August. No shrub or tree seedlings were planted due
to the late completion date. Site B (see map) is the lower part of Zinc
Hill just above the haul road. It was an old high-wall area which was
reworked with the dozer during May of this year. The site was seeded,
fertilized, mulched and planted with 695 shrub seedlings. Site C (see
map) is on the lower part of Gold Hill and was contoured and ripped during
April. The site was planted with 304 tree seedlings and 150 bare root
Fourwinged saltbush. In June the site was seeded, fertilized, mulched
and planted with 32 Fringed sage and 16 Squaw Currant.
Phase I (site preparation)
All three sites were contoured and ripped using a dozer and left in rough
condition. The contouring and ripping leaves terraces on the slopes which
retain moisture and provide a flat surface in which seedlings are planted.
A D9L Caterpillar dozer was purchased last year by the company and enables
the working of steeper slopes and thus allows for better reclamation on
these slopes.
Phase II (Planting, seeding, fertilizing, mulching)
Phase II work began the latter part of April with the planting of 304 tree
seedlings and 150 bare root fourwinged saltbush by a crew from Colorado
Mountain College. In early June the same crew returned and planted 744
shrub seedlings of various species. Seed and fertilizer was then broad-
cast and the sites mulched with straw.
Following is a list of the tree, shrub and seed mixture used along with
fertilizer rates.
Pinon Pine - Pinus edulis
Ponderosa Pine - Pinus ponderosa
Austrian Pine - Pinus eldericus
Blue Spruce - Picea pungens
Fourwinged saltbush - Artriplex canascents
Mountain Mahogany - Cercocarpus montanus
Fringed sage - Artemisa frigida
Crown Vetch - Coronilla varia
Three-Leaf Sumac - Rhus trilobata
Rubber Rabbitbush - Chrysothamnus nauseosus
Rocky Mountain Thimbleberry - Rubus parriflorus
Squaw Currant - Ribes cereum
Mountain Snowberry - Symphoricarpos oreophilus
