An annual forb and a perennial forb make up the remaining 4.0 percent of
relative vegetative cover. As in the reclaimed area, no annual grasses were sampled.
Data collected from the belt traasects was used to estimate the total woody stems per acre for
each sampled area. Sample size adequacy was reached on the Reference Area in 6 transects.
Sample adequacy was not reached on any of the four Reclaimed Areas (Table 3). The total
amount of shrub "hits" recorded along each belt transect is summarized in Table 10 of the data
Appendix.
TABLE 3
Summary of Sample Adequacy Calculations
Canadian Strip Mine - 1993 Belt Transects
Computed
Average Standard Actual Adequate
Area Stems/Acre Deviation Sample Size Sample Size
Reclaimed Area I 363.5 171.83 2 890.8
Reclaimed Area II 222.0 86.26 2 601.9
Reclaimed Area III 161.5 171.83 2 4512.7
Reclaimed Area IV 606.8 800.02 10 584.0
ALL RECLAIMED AREAS 338.4 197.92 4 N/A
(weighted equally)
REFERENCE AREA 10,297.0 9.99 6 2.5
6
1
