San Luis Project
CDMG Annual Report
March 20, 2003
Page S
any surface water expressions. Ground water recovery wells M-32 and M-33 installed
during calendar year 2000 to capture and remove contaminates contained in the Rito Seco
alluvial groundwater system continued to be operated throughout calendar year 2002.
Ground water recovered from the M-32 and M-33 wells was pumped back to the West Ait
water treatment plant, treated and discharged in accordance with the Colorado Department
of Public Health and Environment discharge permit. Groundwater elevations in the vicinity
of these wells were maintained below an elevation of 8540 ft amsl to ensure ground water
capture and prevent downgradient migration of any contaminates contained in the Rito Seco
alluvial groundwater system. Each of these actions has substantially improved the West Pit
and Rito Seco alluvial groundwater quality.
A total of 115,718,100 gallons (3SS.IS acre-feet) of water was extracted from the West Pit
and 12,267,500 gallons (37.65 acre-feet) of Rito Seco alluvial ground water was extracted
and delivered to the water treatment plant during calendar year 2002. Of this water,
115,004,300 gallons (352.97 acre-feet) was treated and delivered to Rito Seco Creek in
accordance with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment discharge
permit and CDMG TR-26. A total of 9,608,700 gallons (29.49 acre-feet) was transferred
to the tailing facility from the water treatment plant during calendar year 2002 and applied
to revegetation irrigation in accordance with TR-30.
Water treatment plant improvements implemented during third and fourth quarters of 2001
continued to prove beneficial throughout the 2002 calendar year. Water treatment plant
operating efficiencies averaged approximately 89.85 percent throughout the 2002 calendar
year.
During the course of the calendar year 2002, BMRI submitted one technical revision
application to the Division. This revision (TR-32) was submitted requesting modifications
to the current surface water, ground water and process point QA/QC program. At year's
end BMRI requested review and approval of this TR be extended to March 27, 2003.
Attached are the Annual Fee and Report Request, and the $1,000 annual fee payment.
Should you have any questions concerning the above reported activities, please feel free
to contact either Mr. Julio Madrid or myself.
~~S°i~erely,
`}3i1 yl,
Director of Env.
