' HISTORIC FUELING AREA, LIMITED SOIL SAMPLING
BMG RESOURCES' SAN LUIS FACILITY
' SAN LUIS, COLORADO
October 22, 2002
Terracon Project Number: 46027059
1.0 PROJECT BACKGROUND AND SITE DESCRIPTION
Terracon has completed the limited soil sampling in the area of BMG Resources' historic
' fuel and lubricant storage and dispensing operation. The San Luis facility is located
approximately 3.5 miles northeast of the town of San Luis, Colorado. The fueling area (site)
was located west of the vehicle ready-line and north of the office/laboratory buildings (see
Figure 1 Site Diagram in Appendix A and the 1999 USGS Aerial Photograph in Appendix B).
The site is approximately 80 feet by 110 feet and is lined with a synthetic material. The
' Liner is anchored by a berm at the perimeter of the site. The liner is covered by
approximately 24 inches to 30 inches of fill material. Based on information provided by Bill
Lyle of BMG Resources, petroleum hydrocarbon products used at the site included
' gasoline, diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, and oil. All petroleum products were stored in and
dispensed from aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) or 55-gallon drums that were located
within the bermed and lined site. All storage and fueling equipment have been removed
' from the site. Terracon did observe what appeared to be the electrical connection for the
historic fuel pumps (see Figure 1 in Appendix A).
' 2.0 SCOPE OF SERVICES
' BMG Resources retained Terracon to provide environmental services in an attempt to
identify obvious releases of petroleum hydrocarbon materials at the site. At the direction of
BMG Resources, Terracon performed the following tasks:
• Reconnaissance of the site and immediately surrounding area;
• Excavation and observation of backhoe test pits advanced in the central portion of
the site;
• Collection of soil samples for laboratory analysis to detect benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) and to detect total recoverable petroleum
hydrocarbons (TRPH);
• Backfilling with the material removed from each excavation; and;
• Preparation of this report, summarizing the analytical results.
1
