<br />Restoration of protective dikes damaged in 1979 spring floodwaters. Dikes built in
<br />1953 arld restored by Corlls of Engineers in 1973, protect a commercial sand, gravel,
<br />and concrete plant on the west bank of the Animas River. Private pasture and develop-
<br />ment land, and a condominium sewage treatment lagoon located south of of the plant are
<br />also protected from flood damage by the dikes. Proposed dike repairs will be accom-
<br />plishecl by replacing material eroded into [he river channel and compacting it into
<br />place with a bulldozer. Critical areas of dike erosion will be covered with large
<br />~, bou]der riprap salvaged from fill material and with pre-cast concrete blocks. 9pprox-~
<br />imately 3,000 cubic yards of materials from the filled river channel hill be required.
<br />Temporary diversion of the river to the east in an umregetated alternate river channel
<br />will insure water quality and wildlife protection during construction.
