. ...
December 19, 1985
Page 2
Finally, in our review of the stream data we concentrated on the Uranium data
presented in Table 10 on page 40. Cotter's report concludes that the
croaspile differences in uranium concentrations "are not statistically
significant" when considered on an annual basis. We would have to concur with
this determination based on the limited data. However, selected data such as
the August 1984 sampling strongly suggests impact.
The Division concluded that although the uranium concentrations measured
during the study were well below the stream standard for Ralston Creek, we
believe the evidence indicates that an impact to the stream Sa occurring at
the site in the stretch of creek that the waste rock piles impinge upon. We
cannot, however, conclusively determine the source of the impact. Once
groundwater regulations have been promulgated the issue may be addressed in
greater detail.
If you have any questions concerning this issue please contact hie office at
extension 3726.
Sincerely, ~
/.
.~~~ ~ y
aureen Dud ey
Industrial Wastewater Engineer
Permits and Enforcement Section
WATER QUALITY CONTROL DIVISION
MD/lc
xc: Mined Land Reclamation
Don Simpson, Groundwater Unit, WQCD
Jon Scherschligt, Planning and Standards Section, WQCD
Derald Lang, D.E., Field Services and Monitoring Section, WQCD
