HULL SEEP -CAMAS WETLAND~MEATION REPORT <br />SITE DESCRIPTION <br />The Cooley Gravel Site is located in Adams County, Colorado straddling the South Platte River. <br />The site occupies portions of three sections, 16,17,and 9 of Township 2 South, Range 67 West. <br />The section comers meet at approximately 39° 53' I S" Latitude and I04° 53'0" Longitude, <br />UTM (5083som.E. 4114soom.N.). <br />METHODOLOGY <br />Field investigations were conducted to delineate existing wetlands in the project area. A routine <br />survey was done in accordance with guidelines developed by the Department of the Army, Corps <br />of Engineers in the 1987 publication titled: Coros of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual <br />(Department of the Army, 1987). <br />The presence and composition of hydrophytic vegetation was determined in the field. Soils were <br />examined for hydric chazacteristics using soil core sampling methods. The presence of <br />hydrologic chazacteristics supporting existing wetlands was made by visual observation. <br />WETLAND COMMUNITY DESCRIPTIONS <br />Wetlands in this survey have bee divided into five azeas for the purpose of discussion (Drawing <br />1). Areas adjacent to the South Platte River were excluded from this survey because no potential <br />disturbance has been proposed for these areas. <br />Area I <br />This site is located at the end of 100`h avenue neaz the Fulton Ditch headgate station. A hill with <br />a northwest aspect slopes to a fenced pasture, which is relatively level before dropping into the <br />Spring Creek Ditch. Most of this flat pasture azea is a wet meadow dominated by three square <br />(Shoenoplecrus americanus). Hydric grasses aze mixed with water sedge (Carex aquatilus) and <br />field sedge (C. microptera) in this area but heavy grazing made complete identification <br />impractical. The soil has a saturated surface layer high in organic content. White mineral <br />deposits have accumulated on the soil surface and vegetation, caused by evaporation of shallow <br />surface pools. A thick layer of clay slows percolation of surface water into the saturated gravel <br />layer below. It is this gravel layer that conveys ground water to the seeps that emerge from the <br />slope as the pasture drops into the ditch. The seeps are vegetated mainly with cattail (Typha <br />lotlfolio), open azeas of muck soil are dominated by water cress (Nasturtium o~cinale). <br />Ditches on both sides of 100°i avenue have hydric vegetation and drain into Spring Creek Ditch, <br />which then empties into Fulton ditch north of the road.
