In most places it is in long, <br />narrow areas more than 40 acres in size. This soil has <br />the profile described as representative for the series. <br />Included kith this soil in mapping are small areas of <br />Valmont clac loam, 1 to .^, percent slopes; Nunn clay <br />loam, ~ to :i percent slopes; and Valmont wbblc clay <br />loam. 1 to :i percent slopes. These included soils make up <br />about 15 percent of each mapped area. <br />Runoff is t:lpid on this soil. The erosion hazard is <br />moderate. <br />All of the acreage of this soil is used for irrigated and <br />dreland crops anc~ for pasture. (Capabilih• units IIIe- <br />, irrigated, and IIIe-7, nonirrigated; tree suitability <br />gTOllp .~i) <br />Valmont cobbly clay loam, 1 to 5 percent slopes <br />~VCCI.-Thls SOIL 1S Olt ]llgh terrnces and outwash fans in <br />the nest-celttral part of the area. In most places it is in <br />areas more tlla» 30 acres in size.. <br />The p]•ofile of this soil is ]Hoch like the one described <br />as representative for the series, but. the surface layer is <br />about. A inches of cobbly- clav loam. The subsoil is about <br />14 inches of cobbly clai• loam or cabblc clay (fig. 5). <br />Inchuled ycitL this soil in mapping is a Valmont-like <br />soil t.hnt is redder than ~th~is ..=.oil, that has less than 10 <br />percent gravel and cobblestones, and that contains wane <br />depressions supporting no vegetation and haying a <br />crusted surface lacer. Also included are small areas of S%al- <br />mont clac loam. ~ to 5 percent slopes. These included <br />soils make np about 15 percent of each mapped area. <br />Runoff is medium on this soil. The eroslon hazard is <br />slight to moderate. <br />This soil is not well suited to cultivation and the har- <br />vesting of crops because it has too many cobblestones and <br />ton much gravel on its surface. It is, however, a good <br />grass-producing soil..lfost. of the acreage is used for <br />native range. A fen- small areas nre used for irrigated <br />pasture. (Capabilitc writs S%s-1, irrigated. and \'IIs-I, <br />nonirrisated: tree suitability ~ oup 8) <br />Valmont cobbly clay loam, 5 to 25 percent slopes <br />IVcEI.-This soil is on the side slopes of high terraces or <br />out.wash fans. mainl}• in the south-central part of the <br />Area. Ilr most places it is in long, narrow areas more <br />than `?0 acres in size. <br />The profile of this soil is mach like the one described <br />as tropresentntice for the senics, but the surface layer is <br />about 6 inches of cobbly clay loam. The subsoil is abort <br />12 inches of cobbl}' cla}• or cla7 loam. There are varying <br />amounts of gt•avel and cobblestones throughout the pro- <br />file. <br />Included with this soil in mapping are a few small <br />areas of a t'almont-like soil that has a lacer of gravel <br />at a depth of more. than 40 inches. A few minor areas <br />hay-e shale or sandstone underlying the y-erc gravel]}• <br />layers within a depth of 40 inches from the surface. <br />Also included are some small areas of Valmont cobbly <br />clay loam. 1 to 5 percent slopes. Included soils make up <br />about ?n percent of each mapped area. <br />Runoff is medium to rapid on this soil. The erosion <br />Iruzard is moderate to high. <br />All of the act•eagc of this soil is used for native range. <br />(Capabilitc unit t%TIs-1, nanirriga[ed: tree surtahlht}' <br />group 6) <br />VGeld Series <br />The 1Feld series is made up of deep. well-drained soils. <br />These soil= formed m) smooth uplands. mainlc in loamy <br />grind-laid parent material. Slopes aye. 0 to ~ 5 percent. <br />Elevations arc 4 q00 to 5,300 feet. Tho native vegetation <br />is main]}- short grasses.
