• A total of 24 soil samples were collected during this investigation. Lab analysis,
reported on 9/12/97, confirmed total BTEX concentrations ranging 5om no-detect to
1 9.4 mg/Kg and TEPH concentrations ranging from no-detect to 25,000 mg/Kg;
• All samples were collected using new, clean sample jars and stainless steel scoops, and
' were kept on ice until delivery at the laboratory two days following collection,
accompanied by appropriate sample chain of custody forms;
1 Petroleum contaminated mine spoils in the fuel spill area are expected to contain
elevated levels of radionuclides, though no radionuclide analysis was p:rformed during
this investigation;
' The nearest resident is located approximately 6,600 feet south of the fuel spill area;
1 There are two water wells, a spring, and two small water reservoirs located within one-
half mile of the fuel spill area. There are no known water wells within. 500 feet of the
1 spill area;
• Assuming that the site lies within the Remedial Action Category II (RAC II), the clean-
up guidelines state that"Soils which are contaminated and which have impacted or have
the potential to impact RAC II ground water should be remediated to concentrations of
less than or equal to 50 mg/Kg BTEX and 250 mg/Kg TPH. These: levels may be
1 determined to be more or less stringent based upon risk assessment and feasibility
studies. Monitoring of ground water not previously impacted may be required."; and
• Based on laboratory analysis of soil samples collected from the area, the estimated
extent of contamination is approximately 90 feet wide by 110 feet long. with estimated
depths ranging from 0.5 feet to 3.0 feet below the original ground surface (provided that
' the contamination does not extend below the sandstone caprock layer).
t9.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
1 This ISCR should be submitted to the Solid Waste Unit of the Colorado Department of Public Health
and Environment's (CDPHE's) Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division for review and
1 comment. Pursuant to Title 8, Article 20.5, Part 101 (2)(b)(IX), the pre-existing on-site ASTs are not
1 regulated by the State Oil Inspection Section; the CDPHE will oversee the manaigement of the
petroleum contaminated soils.
1
17
i
1
