r VJ CL.L IIQIIQLIVC
' Poverty Gulch Project
Teller County
Mine Feature Identification- 362,363,369,370
Feature 362 is an open adit with a depth of over 800 feet. Feature 363 is an
adit with a depth of over 650 feet. Feature 369 is a shaft with a depth of
200 feet. Feature 370 is a shaft with a depth of 60 feet.
The proposed work for the adits includes installing culverts and grates in the
openings. These closures will allow authorized access.
The proposed work for features 369 includes installing concrete panels over
the opening. A surface area will be excavated around the opening to provide a
firm base for the cap or a concrete footing poured, if appropriate. Highly
compacted work areas will be ripped to a depth of 6 inches, and all disturbed
areas will be seeded with grass species capable of supporting the
post - reclamation land use of grazing for livestock and wildlife. Seeded areas
will be fenced off, if appropriate, until they are able to withstand grazing
pressure.
Feature 370 will be safeguarded by backfilling. The feature will be
backfilled to the surface using a graded fill technique. Specifically, the
opening will be filled by first placing a layer of large diameter riprap into
the opening followed by a second smaller layer designed to fill in the voids
of the larger material and to form a solid base for the remaining fill.
Following this operation, the opening will be filled with waste material from
the nearby piles to form a compacted mound V -24" above the existing grade.
The backfilled area will then be suitably reclaimed to blend in with the
surrounding area. An identification monument will be placed over the center
of the backfilled opening.
In regard to the conduct of the actual work, each project will be monitored by
a staff field engineer who will be on site to ensure that project work is
completed as specified. Projects will be inspected prior to payment and no
project will be considered complete until all extraneous disturbances created
by the contractor have been corrected. All contractors are required to have
both public liability and workman's compensation insurance during the term of
the project. We have had several instances of vandalism to mine closures.
The closures are designed to be vandal resistant and the program will monitor
the closure periodically. However, the landowner should also inspect the
closure to insure that it remains safeguarded.
Areas adjacent to the mine sites often contain mine related structures
(buildings, tiooles, Foundations) that may be hi3torically significant. The
project work will avoid any disturbances to these structures in order to
preserve 'their integrity.
jla
9604F
