RECEIVED
MAC ~ 7 2003 INTERNATIONAL URANIUM (USA) CORPORATION
Division of Minerals and Geology 2003 ANNUAL REPORT
West Sundav Mine - M-1981-021
A number of site maintenance and repair activities were conducted at the West Sunday Mine
in the period from June 2002 through May 2003. These activities were performed to stabilize the
mine site, to prevent dispersal of site materials, and to clean up the general mine site. The following
work was conducted in November 2002:
- Repaired two washouts on the waste dump crest; catchment berm at dump toe prevented
dispersion of dump material, but repairs were made to provide stability;
- Waste dump surface was dished to collect and hold runoff on the top of the dump;
- Waste dump perimeter berm was repaired to ensure containment;
- Two low grade stockpiles were combined and moved away from dump edge to the
southeast comer of the dump to prevent dispersal of material;
- Timbers were stacked across the front of the portal and dirt was piled up in front of the
portal to prevent unauthorized access into the mine;
- Debris and trash were collected in the mine site area and disposed;
- Fuel tank at the northwest corner of the shop was removed;
- Areas of oil-contaminated soil were aerated, including the spot were waste oil barrels
were leaking, as noted in the December 19, 2002 inspection by the Division of Minerals
and Geology.
hi October 2002, the Operator had the West Sunday mine site, remote vent hole locations,
power installations, and access roads surveyed, and updated maps were prepared. Updated maps for
the West Sunday Mine were submitted to the Division of Minerals and Geology Durango Field
Office on March 28, 2003. Since that time, the Durango Field Office staff has provided comments
and questions about the maps. In May 2003, additional site surveying work was conducted to add a
few minor features to the March 2003 maps, in response to questions from the Division staff.
In May 2003, representatives of the Operator met with personnel from San Miguel Power
Company. All power facilities in the group of Sunday Mines were inspected, and the utility
confirmed which installations belong to the Operator and which belong to the utility. This
information is being added to the detail site maps, and revisions to the maps will be forthcoming.
The revised maps will include updated information on power facilities ownership and will also
include the additional surveying items that have been requested by Division staff.
The West Sunday Mine will remain on standby status during 2003. No site reclamation
work is presently planned during 2003; additional site maintenance and repair may be conducted if
necessary.
