analysis program uses the simplif ed Bishop and Janbu methods of analysis.
The user enters the geologic cross-section model parameters and the failure
surface search method; the computer algorithm searches through thousands
of failure surfaces and prints out ten with the lowest FOSS. Refer to Slope
Analysis with XSTABL, Sunil Sharma, Department of Civil Engineering,
University of Idaho, Moscow, ID, June, 1992, for more detail on XSTABL
analytical methods.
Soil parameters used for the model aze presented in Table 2. The values
aze based upon previous studies (International Engineering Company, Inc.,
Foundation Investigation Report, Proposed Coal Preparation Plant, Mount
Gunnison Mine, Somerset, CO, October, 1976; and Chen and Associates,
Geotechnical Site Evaluation, July 31, 1980) with the exception of the
colluvium and collapsed coal seams. The colluvium parameters came from a
recent (June, 1994) triaxial stress test performed on a borehole sample taken
prior to construction of the materials storage bench. The mined coal seam
parameters aze conservatively set as a nearly cohesionless soil horizon.
9
