January 1998 Ken Coal ComDanY ' 1997Annual Hydrology Report " CO Permit No. G80~006 ~ 21
6.0 MINE AREA SURFACE WATER
The Kerr Mine azea experienced precipitation (rain and snow) during January 1997 through April
1997, which resulted in a spring runoff in Mazch through eazly May. The precipitation generated
discharge from all sediment ponds, which include Site 301 (Pond A), Site 302 (Pond B), Site 303
(Pond C), Sice 304 (Pond D), Site 305 (Pond E), Site 321 (Pond F), and Site 322 (Pond G).
Total suspended solids (TSS) and iron concentrations at the dischazge paints noted above exceeded
permit limits at various times. Kerr Coal Company maintains that this problem is a direct effect
of runoff and soil gradation existing in the general area of the mine. Stormwater Exemption
Requests for all permit exceedances were submitted to the DMG and are included in Exhibit F,
1997 Mine Area Surface Water Quality Analysis for reference.
Table 8, 1997 Surface Water Statistics -Sediment Ponds, presenu a summary of the data. Field data
sheets aze contained in Exhibit A, 1997 Field Data and results from laboratory testing aze presented
in Exhibit F, 1997 Mine Area Surface Water Quality Analyses.
Surface Water Monitoring Stations 300, 306, 314, and 327 experienced flow from spring runoff as
presented on Table 9, 1997 Surface Water Statistics -Selected Mine Area Surface Stations. Field
data collected at these stations are presented in Exhibit A, 1997 Field Data and results from the
laboratory analyses aze presented in Exhibit F, 1997 Mine Area Surface Water Quality Analyses.
Seasonal variations in flow and water quality at stations 300, 306, 314, and 327 are illustrated in
graphs of flow, pH, TSS and TDS vs EC which aze presented in Exhibit G, 1997 Mine Area
Temporal Trend Analysis. On the graphs, the flow data points shown as zero represent either no
flow or a trace of flow. For water quality pazameters, zero indicated that the value was below
laboratory detection limits. Please refer to the tables for actual values.

xasgr eervrvuei ~xoxo rr+i TenaMatrix lnc. •AO. Box 774018'Steamboat Springs, Colorado 80477 •~970)879~616021
