<br />' southwestern comer of the main pit but no significant new exposures were <br />available for mapping and thus no additional data were collected from the <br />main pit during the 2004 reconnaissance (Photo 4). <br />I' 2) The quarry walls appeared to be relatively dry indicating the absence of <br />' significant hydrostatic pressures that could influence pit stability. Noticeably <br />absent is any major seepage in the southwest comer of the main pit, which <br />had been documented in prior reports. <br />I' Two areas of minor groundwater infiltration/accumulation were visible at the <br />time of our inspection. In the southwest comer of the middle level, some <br />I' surface seepage was present; however, it was not apparent as to whether <br />the seepage was the result of surficial snowmelt, or runoff that accumulates <br />' in the minor valley depression beyond the quarry, or groundwater infiltration <br />conveyed by permeable discontinuities. The other area of visible <br />groundwater was in the northeast comer of the main pit near where the <br />sump is located. At the time of inspection, no visible seepage into the sump <br />' could be detected. It is generally assumed that the sump is locally lowering <br />the groundwater in advance of the main pit floor. A sump pump continues <br />' to be utilized for controlling water in the pit. <br />3) Overall, the rock mass in the southern expansion area was noted as more <br />massive, with fewer discernable foliation surtaces than the rock exposed in <br />the main pit (Photo 5). More importantly, the foliation surfaces measured in <br />the expansion area, between the elevations of 6,990 to 7,075 feet, had a <br />' different overall orientation than the dominant foliation orientation mapped <br />within the middle level and main pits. On average this foliation set dips 17° <br />' to the southwest, as opposed to the 37° dipping south-southeast oriented <br />foliation set located in the rest of the quarry. <br />' 4) The rock mass exposed in the middle level of the quarry continues to <br />remain blockier and more weathered than the rock excavated in the main <br />-s- <br />
