measurement. Wooden stakes are then driven at each plot corner and further measurements made
from those. Upon completion, the entire experiment site will consist of 20 plots of equal size.
Each plot will be flagged according to Figure 3.
Each plot is to be planted with a total of 24 plants, in 2 by 4sub-blocks: eight plants each of the
three species Serviceberry (AMEALN), Chokecherry (PRUVIR), and Gambel Oak (QUEGAM).
Seedlings are to be planted 1 meter on center and distributed evenly throughout each plot (see .
Figure 2). A measuring stick or hoedag handle will aid in the measurements.
The newly planted seedlings will then be treated according to the randomized plot assignment.
Plots designated GD I-5 will receive an application of TREE GUARD®, a deer repellent
produced by Nortech. The chemical is pre-mixed and is applied with a squeeze trigger
applicator to dry plants Tlie chemical can be applied to bare branches in the fall or to new,
unprotected growth in the spring For the purposes of this experiment, the seedlings will receive
an application in the fall only Plots designated DA I-5 will receive an application of DEER-
A\'VAY~, a big game repellent produced by Int Agra. The chemical must be mixed immediately
prior to application and is applied with a spray mechanism to dry plants on all areas of the plant
likely to be browsed. Plots designated TP I-5 will be protected by TREE PROS brand tree
protectors. The protector is assembled around the newly planted seedling and staked to avoid
dislocation. The device provides protection from herbivory as well as fiom drought and extreme
weather conditions. Plots designated as C I-5 will remain untreated for the entire year in order
to serve as control plots for analysis of the results of the experiment.
C'igure 1 Figure 2
bm
~r
Q
0
~Z
4m
~~
1
I
0
J
/;,
/ _ _
~~wJER PWT
STAKE
I0.
,~
eo~ncw~7'
].S+SP~cI>:S Zed SPb~.tES 3r~1 ~PK~E`~
~5;~ rg.,,-,~~
~- - - -

I
a i 1~1m~
Z..
~;~~
~~
l~

n
~ ~ i
~..
Pv~T Ha%ntDArr~C
C-otUtER
STAK1'c
