Species density in
two of the reclaimed areas monitored in 2004 nearly equaled or exceeded that of two of the three
reference areas.
•
Species density of the reclaimed areas has always been observed at levels below the reference
areas until 2002. Two native-seeded reclaimed areas (1997 and 2000) had, as of 2004, very
substantial presence of native perennial forbs (both with 4.4 native perennial forb species per 100
sq.m.). Wadge Pasture has increased from 2.4 native perennial forbs species per 100 sq.m. in
2002 to 3.4 per 100 sq.m. and 3.8 per 100 sq.m. in 2004. This may be the result of the drought of
2000 through 2004 as the very competitive dominant grasses were stressed and perhaps
rendered less oppressive to perennial forbs.
• 16
