West Elk Mine 2001 Annual Hydrology Report
2.2 Stream Flow Data
The North Fork of the Gunnison River (North Fork) and Minnesota Creek are the major drainages
in the Project area. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) maintains gaging stations on both of these
streams. Flow in these watersheds is dominated by snowmelt from upland azeas. Flow in WY2001
in the North Fork was well below the 30-year historical average. Average monthly flows for
WY2001, compared to historical data ranged from 31 percent for June to 117 percent for
September and the annual monthly average was 59 percent. The peak flow in the North Fork was
1,820 cfs on May 2, 2001.
Minnesota Creek flows for WY2001 were also below the 27-yeaz historical average. Average
monthly flows for WY2001, compared to historical data ranged from 28 percent for April to 70
percent for December and January and the annual monthly average was 41 percent. The peak flow
in Minnesota Creek was 47 cfs on May 17 through 19, 2001. A summazy of the stream flow data is
graphically presented in Figure 2.

\J
4
Project # 00301 HydroGeo, Inc.
