West Elk Mine 2001 Annual Hydrology Report
• WEST ELK MINE
2001 ANNUAL HYDROLOGY REPORT
MOUNTAIN COAL COMPANY, LLC
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The 2001 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) details Mountain Coal Company's (MCC) hydrologic
monitoring activifies at the West Elk Mine (Project) for the Water Year 2001 (WY2001). The
report summarizes the monitoring information and presents an analysis of the data with respect to
mining operations as required by MCC's Permit C-80-007 with the Colorado Division of Minerals
and Geology (CDMG).
1.1 Overview of Mining Operations
In WY2001, mining was completed in longwall panel 13 and mining was advanced up to crosscut
16 in longwall panel 14. Development mining continued in longwall panels 14, 15, and 16.
2.0 HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY OF 2001 WATER YEAR
During WY2001 precipitation and snowfall were below average, resulting in reduced streamflows
in the North Fork of the Gunnison River and Minnesota Creek
2.1 Climatological Data
Precipitation and snow data for the project azea for WY2001 were derived from the Paonia 1 SW
(56306), Overland Reservoir (59853), and McClure Pass (59743) meteorological and Snotel
stations. Figure 1 shows WY2001 monthly average data compazed to 30-yeaz historical averages.
The monthly average precipitation for WY2001 compazed to the 30-year average ranged from 26
percent of average in September 2001 to 193 percent of average in August 2001. Overall WY2001
precipitation was 75 percent of the 30-year average.
The accumulated snow water equivalent, a standard measure of snow pack, was collected from
Snotel data at Overland Reservoir and McClure Pass. The Overland Reservoir data showed that
the accumulated snow water equivalent from October 2000 through Februazy 2001 was 62 percent
of the 30-year historical average. The McClure Pass WY2001 snow data showed a similar trend,
r 1
U
l~oi~caoosot HydroGeo, Inc.
