West Elk Mine 2001 Annual Hydrology Report <br />• Laboratory of Steamboat Springs Colorado, Flows are measured using Parshall flumes and <br />continuous flow data aze collected using Stevens Type F recorders and data loggers and Global <br />Water pressure transducers and data loggers. Field water quality and lab samples aze collected at a <br />non-aerated flowing section of streams with minimum turbidity. Field measurements are taken <br />with a Hydac mulflmeter, calibrated with standard buY"fer solutions. Samples for lab analysis are <br />collected in pre-fixed sample bottles provided by the laboratory. Sample bottles aze sealed, <br />labeled, placed on ice, and shipped to the lab for analysis. All sampling equipment is rinsed with <br />distilled water and sample water prior to tesflng or sample collection. <br />Spring and seep monitoring is the same as described for surface water monitoring with the <br />exception of flow measurements. The flow channel is dug to facilitate positioning a measuring <br />bucket. Flow is measured by the timed volumetric method. Flow rate is determined by recording <br />the fime required to fill a container of known volume. This procedure is repeated several times and <br />an average flow rate is calculated. <br />Sampling of ground water wells includes water level measurement and field and laboratory <br />sampling. The static water level in the well is measured to the neazest 0.1-inch, using a Solinst or <br />Heron brand electronic well sounder. Following water level measurement field and lab samples aze <br />• collected, as described above. The wells at the Project aze not bailed prior to sampling because of <br />their very slow recharge rates. Rather than bailing several volumes of water, samples are collected <br />using a point source bailer. A point source bailer can be lowered to a selected interval in the well <br />to collect an undisturbed sample from that zone. Field water quality measurements and lab <br />samples are handled as described for surface water monitoring. <br />Underdrain and mine inflow monitoring includes flow measurement and field and laboratory <br />sampling. Flow rates area measured using the Gmed volumetric method, described above for <br />spring and seeps. Field water quality and lab samples are collected using the same procedures <br />described for surface water monitoring. <br />4.0 MINE WATER MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES <br />The mine water management acflvities include fresh water intake from the North Fork and <br />discharge of treated sanitary wastewater, sedimentation ponds, and mine water inflow.
