West Elk Mine 2001 Annual Hydrology Report 12
I • 3.4 Underdrain and Mine Water Monitoring
Two underdrains and three mine inflow sites are currently monitored. The underdrains are located
at the lower refuse pile (L,RP) and refuse pile expansion (RPE). The LRP underdrain is located
above the sediment ditch at the base of the pile east of sediment pond MB-2R. The RPE
underdrain is located just above the RPE sediment pond. Mine inflows are monitored at sites
where discernable flows aze greater than 5 gpm and/or flows last longer than 7 days. If mine
inflows are continuous, they are sampled for laboratory analysis at least annually. Locations of the
mine inflow sampling sites for WY2001 are shown on Map 1. A summary of the underdrain and
mine inflow monitoring is presented in Table 6.
Table 6
Summary of Underdrain and Mine Inflow Monitoring
n
L_J
Underdrain Flow Measurement Field WQ
(pH, cond, temp) Annual Lab Water
Quality
LRP 3 x Year 3 x Yeaz Low Flow Period (4)
RPE 3 x Yeaz 3 x Yeaz Low Flow Period (4)
Mine Inflows
14 E Bleeder 10/XC El 3 x Yeaz 3 x Yeaz Low Flow Period (4)
BCM 30/XC 3 x Yeaz 3 x Yeaz Low Flow Period (4)
13A 7-8/XC, 1 Enuy 3 x Yeaz 3 x Year Low Flow Period (4)
3 x year - 77aee times per yeaz
(4) Lab parameters include TDS, Cond., pH, Ca, Mg, Na, K, SAR, hazdness,
bicatb., CI, Nitrite/Nitrate, P04, 504, Pe (mt & diss), Mn (tot & diss), Al, As (tot),
Cal, (_L, Pb, Hg (tot), Mb, Se (tot), Bo, Zn
3.5 U.S. Forest Service Resources
•
MCC and the U.S. Forest Service District Office in Paonia, Colorado (Forest) have agreed to
informally monitor the Forest's appropriated water resources that are located over planned
longwall panels and within the angle-of-draw of potential surface impacts of the mining operations.
These resources aze listed in Table 7 and shown on Map 3.
Project # 00301 HydroGeo, Inc.
