This follow-up was
initiated during the March 1997 field inspection. The following
information resulted from this inspection.
What explanation can be provided for the spastic variation of
depth-to-water measurements of 12 and 17 feet over the period
of record for PAW-3? Again, 1992 and 1994 zero values should
be corrected.
Greystone responded that this well is located northeast of the
prep plant at the New Elk mine. This well is not located as
described. The well is located west of the prep plant along
the straight section of the Purgatoire River that was re-
located. It is a 12 inch culvert turned on end immediately
south of the river in the river channel. Water level was
measured at 17.4 feet from the top of the casing (TOC) Flow
in the river was very low at this time. The well should again
be probed to determine depth to water at a time when the river
is running at a high flow. Greystone maintains that the
variation is depth is related to the flow and a 5 foot
difference is reasonable. I believe that this variation is
excessive and the variation may be due to the height of the
casing above ground level.
What does the November notation "bailed out-contaminated" mean
for PAW-7. Please provide specifics. Again, zero values need
corrected.
Greystone responded that PAW-7 is located below Pond 5 at
Golden Eagle and had a low recharge rate. Bailing apparently
stirred up sediment in this well and the statement of
contamination was mis-leading and had only to do with the
sediment problem which precluded acquiring a good sample.
Greystone failed to indicate in their response that this well
no longer exists as it was eliminated with Pond 5 reclamation.
6. May sampling visits were missing for LA-221, LA-264, NM-20,
