Peak Project Management, LLC
3800 County Road 63.9
Trinidad, CO 81082
February 10, 2003
Kent Gorham
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Re: New Elk Mine Permit No. 81-012
2002 Annual Reclamation Report
Dear Mr. Gorham:
Telephone/Fax: (719) 546-4975
Cell: (719) 859-0111
e-mail: ronthompson@sensonics.org
RECE9~/E®
FEB 1 i. 2003
Oivisian o} Minerals and Geology
Enclosed is the Annual Reclamation Report for the year 2002. Reclamation work at the New Elk Mine
consisted only of monitoring and maintenance of previous reclamation areas and sediment control
facilities.
Maps showing reclaimed areas for the East and West Portal Areas at the New Elk are enclosed. Note that
these maps have been updated since [heir 1999 submittal to show no new areas of reclamation in 2000,
2001 and 2002. Since there were no annual changes since the previous submittal in 1999, I have not
submitted additional copies to be filed with the previously submitted 2000 and 2001 annual reports.
As part of the control facility maintenance program, Pond 7 was partially cleaned of accumulated
sediments in December of 2002. Approximately 60% of the pond was cleaned to its originally designed
depth. An average of five feet of sediment was removed from the pond and transported to the development
waste pile for drying to be followed by compaction and final disposal.
An infestation of Canadian thistle on railroad property in 2001 progressed onto mine properly in 2002.
Several aeeas of thistle were selectively hand sprayed with Banvil (dicamba) in July and August of 2002.
These areas included portions of the mine permit area east of the railroad maintenance shop, areas adjacent
to the Coal Lab and the East Portal Substation, and along ditches D17, D17A, D20 and D25A. These
applications were completed by an U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Certified Pesticide Applicator.
These areas will need to be monitored in 2003. A copy of the Management Plan for Noxious Weed
Control is enclosed.
