• 6 •
added in split applications
One-half was added in December of 1976 and
the remainder in June of 1977. The manure was applied in October of 1976.
A mixture of native and introduced grasses, fortis and shrubs was
broadcast over the plot in December 1976 (Table 2). The seed was applied
at 12.5 kg of pure live seed per hectare (634 PLS per m2) and covered
by raking lightly. The subplots to be mulched were covered with excelsior
matting held in place by wire staples.
CF&I personnel designed and established an irrigation system in
July 1977. The system, however, did not provide even water coverage and
records were not kept of the amount of water applied. Irrigation was not
used following the first growing season.
Livestock damaged the plot in the fall of 1977. A barbed wire fence
was constructed around the plot perimeter in the same year and no further
livestock grazing has occurred.
Sampling and Analysis
Vegetation sampling was begun in October 1977, following the first
growing season. Seeded plant growth response was reported to be best in
the treatments using 132 kg N per hectare, 66 kg N per hectare, and 132 kg
N per hectare with mulch. Manure was removed from the analysis because
of the extreme numbers of volunteer annual weeds it introduced.
Sampling during the second growing season was conducted in June 1978.
Plant species response was most vigorous within the treatments 66 kg N per
hectare, 66 kg N per hectare with mulch and 132 kg N per hectare with mulch.
The summer of 1978 was very dry and hot. The plot received less than half of
the normal annual precipitation in 1978. Due to these conditions, mortality
was high among several species of seeded plants late in the summer.
