4
The objectives of the Canon City Dolomite Quarry study are:
To determine the most successful species to establish by seeding;
To determine the nitrogen fertility level, with phosphorus and
potassium held constant, that supports the most vigorous
growth of seeded species;
To determine the effect of mulch, with nitrogen, in supporting
the vigorous growth of seeded species.
Methods
Plot Construction
The test plot was established in the fall of 1976 on a level waste
dump designed to simulate conditions following mining. Subplots measuring
3.65 m by 7.62 m were arranged in a randomized block design of three repli-
cates containing seven treatments (Figure 1). All treatments other than the
absolute control received an uniform application of 22~ kg of P206 as
triple superphosphate and 66 kg of K20 as muriate of potash per hectare.
The following seven treatments were established:
Treatment
1 Absolute Control (no fertilizer, no mulch)
2 Phosphorus/Potassium Control
3 66 kg N per hectare
4 132 kg N per hectare
5 66 kg N per hectare + excelsior mulch
6 132 kg N per hectare + excelsior mulch
The phosphorus and potassium were surfaced applied and worked into
the waste material by rototilling. The nitrogen as ammonium nitrate was
