As can be seen from this table, several wells indicate poor to very poor water
quality. The trends seem to point to pockets of very heavy salt loading that
still remain in portions of Big Bottom due to unknown causes. Baseline water
quality analysis indicated this to be so, and from all appearances this poor
water quality will remain concentrated in Big Bottom for some time to come.
Additionally, high levels (but not necessarily exceedance levels) of lead and
iron and occasionally zinc seem to appear on a seasonal basis in wells
completed in the Middle Sandstone (Wells TR-4, TR-7a, 81-01) and Yampa or
Williams Fork Rivers alluvium (Wells YAW-3, YAW-5, AVF-3, AYF-6 and sampling
points Y-1, Y-2). Some of the alluvial wells show jumps in iron of 2-3 orders
of magnitude, leading one to suspect sampling techniques or extraordinary
surges of mineral water. An explanation of the these phenomena is necessary.

Water levels (ground water primarily), although increasing, may not be
recharging at a rate commensurate with recharge from the elevated
precipitation amounts during the past several years. This may still reflect
influence (drawdown) affected by mining of coal in the local area.
