COLORADO

WESTMORELAND INC.
III {II~II~II~~II~II
sss
P.O. Box 1299 Paonia, Colorado 8'1428 ~ 303-527-4135
31 May 1988
Ms. Catherine W. Begej, Reclamation Specialist
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
215 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
Re: Orchard Valley West Mine - Slide Repair
Dear Cathy:

JUN 2 }988
MINED LAP:D
[~ECLAMATIDN C~\~1$101~
As you know, a small slump developed in the north cut slope of the Orchard
Valley West Mine site this Spring. This slide is approximately 90 feet long and
30 feet wide. The slide dropped down approximately four feet onto the terrace
located midway down the cut slope and appears to have stabilized. No seepage or
flow from the slide is evident.
The Division has inspected the slide, both from the air and on the ground, and
set a deadline of June O1, 1988, for the submittal of a repair plan. The
following is CWI's proposed plan for the management of the slide.
As mentioned above, the slide appears to have stabilized on the terrace. The
terrace is only five feet wide in this area and would not be enough width for
equipment to access the site. If the toe of the slide were removed, this work
would have to be done by hand and would probably cause the remaining slide body
to s1L~p down onto the terrace. Removal of the entire slide body would leave a
steep and probably unstable high wall in the cut slope.
Instead of disturbing the stabilized slide, CWI proposes to divert drainage on
the terrace from the slide toe area. This would be achieved by digging a small
ditch by hand across the terrace just west of the slide to intercept any flows
which may be draining on the terrace from the west. This drainage would be
directed over the outslope.
A slight depression was formed were the soils had slLmmped in the center portion
of the slide. To avoid puddling of rainfall and further saturation of the
slide, CWI proposes to place a plastic liner in the depression and drain any
accLnnulations away from the slide.
CWI proposes [o complete this work by August O1, 1988. Please don't hesitate to
contact me should you have any questions.
Sincerely,
COLORADO IdESTMORELAND INC.
~ ~---~~~
Kathleen G.
