This seed mix will hopefully germinate better and
provide greater ground cover then the previous mix.
Seeding has always been done by broadcasting and this procedure will
be continued. However, in the future an effort will be made to in-
corporate the seed into the soil by dragging a chain, or similar de-
vice, behind the bulldozer on its final pass. This practice will
greatly increase the chances oP good seed germination. Mul'~h will also
be used on seeded areas whenever possible.
It is apparent, from comparing Site A to the other sites, that more
recent reclamation efforts have met with greater success than those in
previous years. This is because of better site preparation and better
species selection. The use of seed stock from the quarry and the change
to a different tree seedling supplier also contribute to this.
Techniques which proved successfull on Site A will be applied to all of
the new sites. This includes site preparation as well as maintenance
applied to the seedlings.
Credit must be given to Ken Klco, mine supervisor, for his leadership
in the preparation of Site A and his persistent efforts in finding the
best seedling species possible.
My thanks to Ken for his guidance this summer and to the miners who
assisted me whenever they were needed.
John Lindstrom
